Selling at Craft Shows - everything you need to know Tuesday 9 - 4:30 $145 Terrill Helander August 7th
Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Process and Booth Design Project
|
This comprehensive workshop will teach students everything they need to know to get started selling at craft shows and steps to creating a successful show. Ideas will be generated, myths dispelled and questions answered as secrets to “doing a show” are revealed. Students will learn how to find shows in their area, and how to choose the right show for their product. They will be instructed in the application and jurying process and what category is right for their product line. Show pricing - including some surprise extras, insurance, additional promoter fees, business licenses, DBA filing, and more business related issues will be covered under a discussion of costs and benefits. Consideration will be given to transportation of booth and set up and travel associated issues and costs. Seller survival tips will be revealed, including techniques for coping with inclement weather, sloping surfaces and other challenges. Suggestions will be given for creating a personal “show survival kit.” Issues associated with running a business will be covered including the State Board of Equalization, collecting sales tax, records, receipts, processing credit cards, and more. Each student will be guided to design their own 10’ x10’ booth in several configurations so they have preliminary set-ups for the variety of situations they may encounter when selling. We will explore types of displays that might work for specific products, how to get display ideas, where to find affordable displays, bags, boxes, cards, signage, mailing lists and more. We will mix in a bit of the psychology of selling, including free gifts, sales and gimmicks. There will be time for questions, suggestions and group interaction and even a little role-playing so selling becomes more comfortable.
