Student Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Type of Workshop: Project

This is a brand new 2 day workshop.
Based on a series of sculptural books I have explored for several years and is featured in The Penland Book of Handmade Books in my how-to section, we will create a small wooden niche to house a treasured item. Keep it close as a private totem or wear it proudly as a sacred amulet. We will carve, paint and otherwise embellish a small arch or rectangular wooden block. By combining a variety of materials including mica, paper, vintage photos, metal and paint and using various carving methods, we will transform found objects into treasured sacred keepsakes and personal reliquaries.
Kit fee of $25 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
- Selection of wooden amulet blocks
- Selection of mica
- Selection of metals, nails, visuals, fabrics to round out and complete your projects.
Supplies provided by teacher
- Selection of double sided tape
- PVA glue
- Extra paints
- Waxes and other finishes
Students should bring:
- Dremel or other rotary tool and an assortment of sanding, grinding, engraving and carving accessories (the little kit that originally came with the tool will do fine.
