: “All things must change to something new, to something strange” - Henry Wadsworth Longellow
I have always been intrigued by the idea of metamorphosis. Not a subtle concept. I mean the idea that a humble caterpillar can transform through some magical mechanisms of nature into a butterfly is really pretty remarkable don’t you think? Using the same principles and performing some artistic magic of our own we are going to literally transform a humble piece of wood into a remarkable and soulful masterpiece. Inspired by alchemists of days gone by we will skillfully negotiate our way through several transformations, exploring the richly layered world of mixed media collage by embracing the use of personal symbols, powerful imagery, textures and found objects that will infuse our work with an essence unlike any other. As each new metamorphosis unfolds we will discuss how to use our transformations to overcome challenges in composition, unify our elements, contend with our inner critic, and finally push the boundaries of collage into a new dimension by incorporating found objects and dimensional elements.
Instructor will supply :
- Paper towel
- Nails, screws, bolts, etc.
- Tools for attaching found objects
- Misc. Collage Items
- Molding Paste
- Portfolio Pastels
- Various Mark Making tools
Students should bring:
- Birch plywood panel cut to 12”X24” (Home Depot or Lowes) or a cradled wood panel 12”x 24” can be purchased at several art stores or online at DickBlick or Wallacks Art Supplies (a cradled panel will make it easier to attach certain dimensional items)
- Paper, ephemera and collage items, think textures and symbols, consider scale, we are working somewhat large, so you may want to enlarge a few of your favorite items (flowers, symbols, etc.)
- Photocopies of faces in magazines, vintage photos, family portraits are fine but I suggest two copies (faces should fill the space of an 8½ X11 sheet of paper) bring a few to choose from and have them copied onto glossy paper if possible (I’ll have some extras just in case)
- Paint: Acrylic paint, preferably Golden, fluid or heavy body (white, black, and any blue, red, and yellow, plus a couple more of your favorites) Some of my paint favorites: Titan Buff, Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, and Quinacridone Crimson, Pthalo Blue, Van Dyke Brown, Green Gold, Pyrrole Red
- White Gel pen (I prefer Uniball Signo or Sakura)
- Black sharpie extra fine tip
- Paintbrushes - bring just a few in different sizes
- Palette (paper plates will work)
- Water Container
- Foam brush
- Matte medium (liquid not gel)
- Gel medium (gloss)
- Exacto knife and scissors
- E6000 Adhesive
- A rubber brayer (I’ll have extras so only bring one if you already have it)
- Found objects, chains, old jewelry pieces just about anything
