This is a 9 hour workshop.
Learn to bind a unique blank journal and than transform it into an artist book. We will build a book with high quality mica and paper with the intention of piercing, gluing, cutting, hammering the pages into a one-of-a-kind bookwork. Our journal will first be bound with a strong and flexible hybrid Coptic binding allowing us the freedom to work back into the structure without fear of damaging the project.
Kit fee of $20 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
- High Quality European text block
- Composite mica pages
- English needles/ Irish waxed linen thread
Supplies provided by teacher:
- PVA Book binding glue
- Double-sided tissue tape
Student should bring:
- 1-inch foam brush
- Small hammer-www.micromark.com/Ball-Peen-Hammer-1-oz-Head,7742.html
- Acrylics, pencils, pens, markers and other drawing tools
- Cutting matte and exacto/utility knife
- ¼ flexcut palm single bevel chisel- http://earthguild.com/products/woodwork/flexcut/flexpalm.htm
- Dremel or other rotary tool with an assortment of sanding, grinding, engraving and carving accessories (the little kit that originally came with the tool will do fine.)
- Suggested Rotary tool safety items: Dusk mask, eye protection, light duty work gloves and hairclip if you have long hair
- It will be best to bring objects no thicker than about ¼ inch.
- Decorative papers, vintage photos-paper, card, tin or glass, found objects, leafs, butterfly wing, pressed flower/plants, pebbles, stones fossils, old book pages, sheet music, old keys, etc
