    The beauty and mystery of these supernatural, winged creatures has captivated our collective imagination for centuries, and artists throughout history have interpreted this form in infinite variations and have rendered angels in every media available. In this class, students will bring a tin can and a porcelain doll head & hands, and create their very own angel. The can itself can be any shape or size, rusty or not (the pictured sample is an empty spray paint can). Instruction centers on seamlessly unifying dissimilar art media by altering the appearance of the porcelain doll parts with texturizing paints, two-part resin clay, metallic surfacing agents, torching techniques, and chemical patinas; coloring/altering copper, brass, and other metals to a weathered, worn, and rusty appearance; and incorporating sturdy connection methods into the overall design of these "well built" dolls. While this is a project-based course, there is much room for individual expression (students are encouraged to bring along found objects, favorite rubber stamps, and other materials, metal or otherwise, to decorate, embellish, and personalize their angel) and students will receive detailed, one-on-one instruction in many useful fabrication techniques, like slip-rolling, engraving, stamping, punching, cutting, drilling, hardware applications, sculpting, and altering copper, brass, hardware, and other objects with special paints, torches, tools, & patinas.

    Kit Fee of $20 payable to Instructor at class time includes: detailed instruction book, wooden base, copper sheet metal, various hardware, chain, metallic surfacing paints, patinas, copper wire, two-part resin clay, brass sheet metal, clear coat spray, and texturizing spray paint.

    Supply List:
  • a tin can (no aluminum)
  • porcelain doll head and hands of your liking
  • tin snips
  • a drill, Dremel, or other rotary tool with assorted drill bits
  • a metal cutting bit
  • sanding barrels and cut-off wheels (a grinding stone can be helpful too)
  • heavy wire cutters
  • large needle nose pliers
  • both Phillip's & flat head screwdrivers
  • a pair of safety glasses
