In this workshop, we will be creating a wall hanging that will be a visual memory. Telling your stories…marking your memories…with the use of symbolism in your artwork will be the focus of this assemblage 101 class. Think of this class as a 3-d visual journal page! By exposing and marrying the collections and trinkets that we have stashed in our creative corners, we will be exploring all of the possibilities of ‘how to say and do it differently’ within our art. We will dig into inquiry and reflection…pulling out stories that need to be told. Layers will be created with oddities, discarded junk alongside a cherished token, photo, or note. These layers will add up to a wonderful personal piece of artwork…one that will represent a specific memory or story through the simple juxtaposition of your inanimate newfound ‘words’. You will begin to see objects everywhere that will ‘say’ what it is that you want to convey. This class will spur you on to keep creating assemblages with heart messages that reflect personal quests, memories, and special dates embracing life.
We will begin by adding meaningful elements as we go along…found and kept souvenirs, keepsakes, and common everyday objects that will be transformed into the uncommon…trinkets that are just waiting to find their place amongst your creative 3-d ‘messages’. I will also be covering the basics of composition, scale, repetition, color and texture to help you delve into your artwork with confidence and much less of the ‘mindless chatter‘…you know, that creative thief! I’ll provide quick/easy little clues, tips, & techniques that will help guide you along the way…while keeping the creative juices free-flowing.
This class is a free-flowing class where the energy of each artist is an important part of the process. We will take some time at the end of the class to talk about how your artwork transformed (…a dissection so to speak) from a box of stuff into a meaningful piece of artwork. This is a vital part of the class, as it will help you to discover the possibilities of how and why we gather these curious elements.

Supply List:
- Cup hooks…just a few in a couple of different sizes
- Old chains…this could be jewelry chain…or an old charm bracelet or necklace…or plumbers chain
- Scraps of fabric, ribbons, trims…as in pompom…tassels… vintage bark cloths or hankies…etc.
- Small box and/or dish…think tiny!
- String, wire,…waxed lined, jute, fishing line…etc
- Hat pins or corsage pins
- Old jewelry discards
- Millinery flowers or beaded flowers
- A shoebox/cigar box full of meaningful ‘attachments’
- Papers/photos/ephemera
- Mica sheets
- Always…’gifts’ of nature…shells, sticks, seed pods…etc.
- An old frame…large if you want this to have a frame around it…or a small one if you want to attach it within the album cover.
- Upholstery tacks and nailsFF
- For the base or 'bones' of the piece... use your imagination...anything goes!

suitcase lids...again just keep scale in mind with the elements that you are using
a wooden tray
an old book
an old leather purse
Some basics to include in your stash…E6000, or liquid nails, or clear caulking… scissors a few acrylic paints cheap brushes matte gel mediu a small hammer sandpape eyelets and setter…etc. There will be a community pile to dig through as well…I’ll bring some extra junk to share, and you are more than welcome to do the same…in fact…encouraged to join in the ’give and take’.
