Going for Gold is a workshop where we will delve into working with gold leaf and polymer clay. Gold leafing is a technique that has been used since ancient times to create luminous, rich surfaces usually on devotional panels or icons. We will be making contemporary icons that will have a highly embellished and jewel-like quality because of the gold leaf. We will cover a wide range of tile making techniques that include rubber-stamping, painting, collage, embedding, embossing and transfers. Students will leave class with a beautiful Icon that can be hung on the wall or displayed on a plate stand or easel.
Kit fee of $10.00 payable to Instructor at class time includes: gold leaf, white handmade tiles, acrylic paint, mica powders, embossing powders, clay blades, scalpels, rubber stamps, spray paint, extra tile, seed beads and paint supplies
- Supply List:
1 small wood plaque or piece of wood no larger than 6 x 8, can be square or rectangular (Michaels sells them). - 4 or 5 small (2 ounce) packages of either Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay-I prefer the darker colors (get 3 of the same color). Make sure the clay isn’t rock hard by lightly pressing into it. You may condition the clay before class by kneading it until soft and then placing it in baggie.
- 1 small (2 ounce) package of WHITE polymer clay, either Premo or Scupley III
- Rolling pin (pvc pipe works too)
- A small bottle of Weldbond glue
- Assorted paintbrushes to include a fine detail brush
- Doo-dads- like metal charms, beads, jewelry parts, Milagros, buttons, crystals, small metal frames to embed into the clay and any other personal items to make your Icon your own.
- A bag or two of glass mosaic tiles, about 1 inch in size or less to fill in any gaps
- Small collage images-I like faces
