    Fascinating copper covers and wonderfully painted pages make up this handsome book.   In the first part of the class, we will paint our paper, exploring techniques and color combinations.   Then we will create our covers using copper foil and dry embossing.   Heat will add a patina and bring out the rich colors available with copper.   Antiquing will enhance the design, bringing out its pattern.  The painted paper is torn into sheets to be bound in either a vertical or horizontal format.  Each signature is wrapped with a black guard and the journal is sewn through the copper eyelets with a combination of Coptic, kettle and French stitch.

    Kit fee of $10 payable to Instructor at class time includes: two pieces of copper foil, two pieces of mat board, black card stock, a blending stump, eyelets, a needle, chrome duct tape, use of my stash of waxed linen thread and the use of acrylic paints.
Supply List
  • Four sheets of 11” x 15” watercolor paper or Stonehenge .  It needs to be a paper that can hold up to wet media.   The paper can be torn to size from a 22”x 30” sheet.
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Bone folder
  • Ruler
  • Awl and cushion (like a mouse pad)
  • Ball tip stylus (for dry embossing)
  • Cheap brushes for paint washes
