The Caterpillar stitch is based on a historic sewing and intended as a decorative and structural binding. I refer to this stitch as the Centipede Stitch as I have modified the binding to be an embellishment on my book sculptures. The seemingly complicated stitch will be mastered after a morning of exploring three variations of this playful stitch. After becoming comfortable with the sewing pattern participants will have the opportunity to add a “critter” to a book or other object they have brought with them to the workshop. The Centipede Stitch can be attached to just about any material that is somewhat sturdy and where the front and back is easily accessible. With a little practice and patience the Centipede pattern can be converted to vines, roots, fossils, ribbons and more.

Sample Board predrilled for three different Centipedes
Assortment of waxed linen thread
Needles
Other misc. materials or tools needed to complete the project- If you bring a finished book or other object to sew a centipede on you will need the following tools, otherwise I will supply you with everything needed.
