Batik Flora & Fauna - A Mixed Media Approach

    Spend a full day creating beautiful nature themed mixed media paintings on Masa paper and canvas. We will explore a special batik technique with Masa rice paper mounted on canvas. We’ll use the “dropped-in color” watercolor technique to paint vivid flora and fauna on the paper support. It’s a messy, fun, out of control way of painting that allows the colors to blend and fuse without “mud”. Colored pencils, ink lines and collage elements will be added to embellish the shapes. Don’t worry if you’ve never painted or drawn before! - I’ll go over the basics and there will be images available to work from or bring some images of your own. You’ll discover how beautiful and bright watercolors can be with this special process. The artwork will be sealed with an acrylic varnish to protect the surface. A border will be painted with an antiquing paint layer and brilliant metallic acrylic paints.

    Materials fee of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes: Masa paper, paste glue, canvases, acrylic UV protective varnish, and varnish containers, and acrylic paint.

    Supplies Provided by Instructor: extra paint, close up images of plants and animals for reference, stamps and stamp pads, ephemera, foam brushes and other tools to use while we work.

    Supply List:
  • Brushes:
    • 1 or more round watercolor brushes: #12, #10, or #8
    • ½ inch or larger flat acrylic brush for collage and varnish
  • Watercolors: pan or personal palette (a Prang set will work or tube watercolors set in a palette)
  • Collage materials: thin translucent decorative papers-white or off white to collage and stamp words or images onto
  • Flat small ephemera stuff like canceled stamps, nature images, etc.
  • Short nature quotes - printed on paper (11 to 16 font size) - leave enough room between quotes so you can tear it out easily. Print out a couple of different font sizes of each quote so you’ll have a choice.
