Introduced during the Middle Ages to save on materials, two volumes yet only 3 covers, this playful structure enables us to explore and compare variations of Coptic bindings. Developed as early as the fourth century, this binding style has withstood the test of time. There are several distinct sewings known as the Coptic stitch. I teach a method that uses two needles for each length of thread, one on either end. Participants will learn both the 2-needle Coptic and a two-color Coptic hybrid binding.
As with all the bindings I teach, I try to help students learn not just the sewing pattern, but also the techniques and tricks to be better binders.
We build our books from a combination of paper, pasteboard and mica.
