    Do you want to create expressive and emotional marks? Do you think you’re not creative? This class will free the creative spirit of play within all of us by inspiring expressive mark-making on paper. Students will be guided through a series of fun exercises to learn techniques to create beautiful, playful and expressive marks using a variety of media such as watercolor, acrylics, inks, metallic powder and leaf; and a multitude of innovative tools such as wood veneer, folded metal pens, dental tools, pine needles and sponges. These creative marks can be used as art pieces on their own, or incorporated into your artwork, journals and scrapbooks. We will create a softbound book to commemorate the techniques we learn in the class. Lots of sharing and personal attention in this hands-on environment will assure a successful, fun experience and will develop a sense of familiarity and competence with a wide variety of tools and media.

    Materials fee of $10 payable to Instructor at class time includes: Folder of samples and directions, Tool kit of weird and wonderful tools, Paper stock for cover and interior pages of sample book

    Supplies provided by Instructor for use in class: Binding needles and cord for sample book, Ink and brushes for cover decoration, Acrylics and tools for use

    Supply List:
  • At least 1 sheet Arches 90 lb. cold press watercolor paper – cut into quarters (the more paper you have, the more opportunities to try other experiments)
  • 1 sheet Arches 90 lb. hot press watercolor paper – cut into quarters
  • A wide, flat brush (at least 1”-bigger is better)
  • #1 pointed brush (I like Winsor-Newton Sceptre series)
  • Prang or other watercolor set or tube watercolor with palette (prefer Prang)
  • paper towels
  • water pot – ideally muffin tin with at least 4 depressions or 2 pint-size plastic containers
  • orange stick (used for nail manicure)
  • scissors
  • x-acto knife
  • glue stick

Optional Supplies:
Any paper you want to experiment with – and paper scraps
Any tube acrylic paint you have – don’t buy it – I’ll have some to share
Sponges – variety – natural and synthetic (whatever you have)
Any brushes you have
